Hiaasen was born on March 12, 1953 in Plantation, Florida. As a child, he spent many hours in the swamp catching animals for pets. At age six, he knew he wanted to be a journalist. In high school, he shared rants with classmates in the newspaper he started. At age 17, he married his high school sweetheart. In 1981, Carl wrote three books with William Montalbano. In 1985, he wrote for "The Herald" and published he first novel in 1986, "Tourist Season." Ever since, he has written more than 1,000 columns and published many young adult and adult novels. He now lives with his family in Florida.
